Instructional Guide #13: E-Bike Display Wiring — What Each Connection Does

  1. Power in: the display taps full battery voltage from the controller — that's how it reads your charge. Key-on vs auto-wake varies by brand, check yours.
  2. Communication pair: two wires (often labeled TX/RX) carry the conversation — the display sends assist commands, the controller sends back fault codes. Wrong error? Check this line first.
  3. Assist buttons: the +/− pad sends signals through that same line to raise or lower pedal assist.
  4. Headlight switch: many displays switch the headlight for you — a small signal from the display, not direct battery power.
  5. Speed data: most controllers report speed over the comm line — no separate speed wire needed.
  6. Sleep behavior: display off means most controllers sleep. Plugged in but dead screen? Check the connector and battery charge before blaming the display.
