Wiring Guide #3: Full Electric Motorcycle Wiring — The Complete System
Here's how power actually flows through an electric motorcycle build, block by block:
- Battery pack (battery+ and battery−) feeds the main contactor, then the key/ignition switch — that switch is what wakes the whole system up.
- Switched power goes to the motor controller. The controller drives the hub motor through the phase output and reads the motor's hall sensors (hall 5V line).
- Throttle signal and brake cut-off wires run from the handlebar switches into the controller — twist the throttle to spin, pull a brake lever and power cuts instantly.
- A DC-DC converter taps the battery pack and drops it down to 12V, feeding a 12V fuse block that runs the headlight, taillight/brake light, turn signals, and horn. The high-voltage drive side and the low-voltage accessory side stay separate.
- The display runs off the controller's display data line — if your screen is dead, check the controller's power-in and that line before blaming the display itself.
Wire colors vary by controller and manufacturer, so always confirm against your controller's label before connecting anything.
